After serving in the war and teaching, Golding submitted a manuscript to various publishers and it was championed for publication in 1954. This manuscript would become Lord of the Flies. The commercial success of this novel led to him becoming writer-in-residence at Hollins College in America. He was appointed a Knight Bachelor and after his death in 1993, the first William Golding Conference was held which was a celebration of his life and work.
Golding spent his later life in Perranarworthal near Truro writing novels such as Fire Down Below in 1989.
